The EtonHouse education group will open its third Middleton International School campus in early 2022. Located in western Singapore, this standalone pre-school and primary school will have annual fees of less than $20,000.
Located next to Haw Par Villa MRT, MIS West Coast will be a small school for up to 500 students from Nursery 2 through to Grade 5 (four to 11 years).
Part of the EtonHouse International Education Group, Middleton opened its first Upper Bukit Timah campus in 2017 in response to a demand for affordable international schools from expat families.
EtonHouse, which owns more than 120 international schools in 12 countries, then opened the Middleton (Tampines) in 2018; currently a Nursery 2 to Grade 9 school, Middleton (Tampines) will expand to become an all-through school for up to 1,000 students by 2024.
The Middleton brand has also expanded into Vietnam, Indonesia and China.
With fees of $15,300 for primary and $17,550 in Grades 6-9, Middleton is nearly 50% cheaper than many other international schools in Singapore. Fees at MIS (West Coast) range from $18,800 for pre-school to $19,300 in Grades 1-5; they are slightly higher than the school offers French and Chinese as part of the curriculum, for no additional cost.
Ng Yi Xian, Executive Director of EtonHouse said"
"By keeping operating costs low, we are able to provide affordable international education without compromising quality. To meet the growing demand, especially from families living in the west of Singapore, we have decided to expand Middleton's footprint so that we can benefit more families."
Class sizes range from 22 in nursery to 28 students in Grade 1 and above
Teaching at this three-storey campus in Harbour Drive will be in line with the pre-school and primary years education offered at the other two Middleton campuses.
Students in the pre-school will follow EtonHouse's Inquire-Think-Learn programme, which takes a Reggio Emilia approach to early years education. Inspired by Reggio Emilia’s philosophy that “the environment becomes the third teacher”, teaching will focus on hands-on discovery learning that allows the children to use all their senses. For Singapore’s youngest learners, Reggio Emilia takes a less structured and more imaginative approach to early years education.
As students move up the school, they will follow the creative and inquiry-led International Primary Curriculum blended with the rigorous Singapore Ministry of Education curriculum for maths. This is a comprehensive curriculum, based on the National Curriculum for England with references to the UK Key Stages 1 and 2, but adapted for international schools, with reference to the IB (International Baccalaureate)) inquiry-based approach to learning. It takes a very creative, thematic approach to teaching and encourages students to research and ask questions about what really interests them.
Maths will be taught based on the high standards of the Singapore MOE curriculum.
Aside from cost, curriculum is the key differentiating factor between Middleton and its sister EtonHouse schools, which offer the IB programme. Also, while EtonHouse schools have a dual teacher arrangement (one English-speaking and one Chinese-speaking native per class), that enables them to deliver a strong bilingual programme, this is not rolled out at Middleton. As an affordable school, this is hardly surprising though. Instead, Middleton will offer a solid curriculum that includes French and Chinese classes, as well as teacher-led after-school activities.
Sports such as swimming and football – which might ordinarily be expected to feature in the school PE programme – are likely to be held in external facilities.
After completing Grade 5, students will be automatically transferred to Middleton's K-12 Tampines campus, which offers the IMYC (International Middle Years Curriculum), and then IGCSEs and A Levels as the school opens more grades.
The West Coast campus is conveniently located next to the Haw Par Villa MRT station, and is easily accessible from the West Coast Highway. Facilities in this three-storey campus will include an indoor play area, library and specialist teaching rooms for the arts and languages. There is a dedicated outdoor space for play and PE lessons.
The good news for parents is that fees at Middleton are among the lowest for an international school in Singapore. Fees range from $18,800 for pre-school to $19,300 in Grades 1 – 5.
Additional charges include fees for technology, ECAs by external vendors, field trips, uniform, and meals. There are early bird offers for Founding Families in the school's first year.
